Product Feature Friday: Hourglass Cosmetics

I want to begin a series on my blog called “product feature Friday”. The title is self explanatory, but basically I will highlight a fashion or beauty product that has really stood out to me throughout the month or time I have been using the product. I also want to give you some background and history into the Brand or Company, which the product is from. Let me know if you guys like this and comment on any suggestions you might have for products you think are outstanding and should get a Friday feature?

This Friday I want to talk about Hourglass cosmetics, a company that was created by founder and CEO Carisa Janes. Janes began the company at the ripe young age of 29, in 2004. Her vision became reality from her need to have a product that would help her clients with problematic, acne-prone skin; very similar to the problematic skin she unfortunately had herself. Her first launch was the Mineral Veil Foundation. No joke guys this foundation turns liquid to powder and sets beautifully on the skin. It also has acne-fighting technology to help clear your skin and even improve the texture of your skin through time. There were rumors shortly after the launch that Angelina Jolie used the foundation on the set of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith”, which catapulted the brand to center stage. I like the foundation, but it is not my absolute favorite product.

Janes is the daughter of a builder and it is no surprise she has the meticulous capability of producing visually astounding products, but I am here to tell you these products aren’t just all glitz and glamour, they actually stand up to a high standard of beautifully crafted, usable makeup. One of the company’s blurbs says, “Hourglass exists at the revolutionary intersection of science, beauty and luxury” and I am going to have to agree with that statement. My absolute, holly grail product from this company has to be the Ambient Lighting powders and this is the product I want to feature today! There is just something in the formula of these powders that helps reflect light in a way that makes you look like a glowing ethereal goddess, and no that’s not a hyperbole, it’s true! One comment I came across truly encompassed the entire brand for me exactly, “Hourglass puts the art in state-of-the-art”. Not only are their packaging and the technology they use to create their products state of the art, but also Carisa’s creativity brings a certain beauty to this brand that truly makes it outstanding and unique. If you have not tried one of their products I highly recommend them.

If you do decide to try the powders after my feature, be sure to follow some simple guidelines. There are currently 6 shades of Ambient Lighting powders and one limited edition powder in the range. I will break them down and tell you which powders are best for which skin tones and how best to use and apply them. Also keep in mind these powders are very subtle looking to the naked eye. It is only when you stand and look in different lighting that you can see these powders work their magic. So don’t be discouraged if you get one and see nothing on your skin, believe me its working!

I created the look above using the “Ambient Lighting Palette” which houses three of shades. The palette is priced at $62 dollars, while a single compact is priced at $45. The palette is definitely a better bang for your buck, but if both these options are too expensive, Sephora sells a small version of “dim light” powder for $22, yes its smaller, but it will allow you to test the powder enough to form your own thoughts about it. Ok now on to the powders:

Ethereal Light – is described as an opalescent sheer, cool white powder. This powder is best as a highlighter more so than an overall powder if you are light to medium to dark in skin tone. If you are of even darker skin tone be careful with this powder, it might look a bit ashy. This powder is perfect for ivory tone skins. All powders are best applied with a powder brush, for a light buildable coverage.

Diffused Light – is described as a soft, warm pale yellow powder perfect for an entire face setting powder application. Best for individuals with medium to dark skin tones. Ivory skin tones beware this powder may be too dark for you, but could be used as a subtle bronzer for very light complexions.

Dim Light – is a neutral peach beige powder that works best on light to medium to dark skin tones as an all over powder. This is definitely the best setting powder for my skin tone.

Mood Light – is a soft, sheer lavender pink powder perfect as a blush or blush topper. This will look beautiful on all skin types as a blusher. For my ebony dark, dark skinned toned beauties beware this might be a bit too ashy, but a good highlighter instead.

Luminous Light – is a champagne pearl powder, perfect for medium to dark skin tones. For medium tones this is the perfect bronzer topper. For the darker complexions it is the perfect highlighter.

Radiant Light – is a golden beige powder perfect for dark complexions as an all over powder. Cold be used by lighter complexion best as a bronzer. I use this one as my bronzer of choice for those no-makeup makeup looks.

Incandescent light- is slightly lighter and has a pearl-like finish, perfect for light to medium skin tones as a highlighter. I use this one on the high points of my face for a beautiful lightened, but not shimmery complexion.

I hope you have enjoyed my first Friday Feature and please do not hesitate to ask any questions or comments you may have on any of the information I have provided. If you want any links to the products just click the bolded ones and it will direct you to the products and where to buy. Happy Friday everyone and TGIF!
